ABOUT TIES

TIES(Towards Inclusion Everywhere in Society)

TIES was started as a support group for parents but has since evolved into an organisation that is structured to provide a range of support services to parents, children, adults with Autism and intellectual disabilities i.e. neurodiverse individuals and communities. The underlying philosophy is inclusion. At the core, the organization and its members are committed to work towards creating a society that acknowledges and accepts the community of people with special needs.

BACKSTORY OF TIES

In 2003, a special educator named Giselle Lobo, brought together a group of parents who had young children with special needs in North Goa. This included children with Autism, Down syndrome and other moderate to severe challenges. Together they started a programme which introduced a Resource Room to impart life skills for special needs/neurodiverse children who attended regular schools. This was the beginning of the concept of inclusion where children with special needs were integrated into mainstream schools in Goa. TIES was formally registered as a society in 2010. CURRENT SITUATION IN GOA

Unfortunately, in terms of numbers, the special needs/neurodiverse community across India is growing substantially. The support at early intervention has improved over the years, however support for vocational training and assisted living for young adults above the age of 18 is completely missing. This impacts the quality of life of both the special needs/neurodiverse adults as well as parents who have very little support that they can depend on.

The support in Goa remains as like the rest of the country. Presently, there are no full time skill centres nor respite centres specifically for young intellectually disabled adults with severe needs. The only organisation- The Owl House at Aldona has a skilling centre & does manage some sessions related to behaviour therapy as well as activities related to daily living for adults with intellectual disabilities. Few of the TIES member’s children do attend some sessions here but many are still home- bound and Inclusive Education is still a far cry.

One of main highlights is the scheme for CWSN (Children with Special Needs) being drafted and implemented for life skill Resource Rooms in mainstream schools of Goa.

Over the last five years, TIES has expanded its scope so as to focus on young adults with intellectual disabilities. These adults need intervention so that they acquire appropriate vocational training skills. More importantly as parents grow older, adults with special needs look for respite centres and residential facilities where with assistance from caregivers they can live with dignity and also be integrated into the community.
